Ansoff matrix: choose a growth strategy

The Ansoff matrix crosses products (existing or new) with markets (existing or new) to distinguish four growth strategies: market penetration, market development, product development and diversification.

When to use it

How to do it, step by step

  1. Describe your current products and markets.
  2. Penetration: how can you sell more of the existing offer to the same market?
  3. Market development: which new markets for the existing offer?
  4. Product development: which new offers for the current market?
  5. Diversification: new offers for new markets, the riskiest. Compare, then choose.

Example

A project management tool for students: penetration = more universities; market development = small businesses; product development = a grading module; diversification = online training.
