Mind map: explore and structure an idea

A mind map puts a central idea in the middle of a page and radiates sub-topics around it as branches. It is used to explore a subject, break a project down or prepare an outline.

When to use it

How to do it, step by step

  1. Write the subject in the centre.
  2. Add the main branches (key themes).
  3. Expand each branch into sub-branches without censoring yourself.
  4. Group, move and delete to clarify.
  5. Turn the end branches into concrete tasks.

Example

Centre: “launch the website”. Branches: content, design, technical, communication. Sub-branches of “technical”: hosting, security, backups.
